Acknowledge the American Heart Association's (AHA) Commitment to Heart Health and Wellness Initiatives Throughout the District (Chief of Schools)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The AHA has continually grown in membership and support as a result of the school district and board leadership.  All dollars raised help with the discovery of new treatments through research, legislative advocacy for our communities, student physical education, nutrition/wellness programs, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training courses for middle and high school students.  Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) has been recognized nationally for their innovative practices that aid the AHA mission of ending heart disease and stroke, getting kids active and healthy, as well as fostering a culture of service-learning.  Most recently, the AHA promoted a districtwide anti-vaping campaign.

During the 2018/2019 school year, HCPS has exceeded expectations and benefited in the following ways:
  • 150,000+ students and families received Heart Healthy messages that included lifesaving information on heart attack and stroke warning signs and symptoms
  • HCPS raised over $388,000 for the fight against heart attack and stroke; this represents a two percent increase over last year’s fundraising efforts
  • 135 elementary and middle schools successfully participated in the jump/hoops service learning program receiving over $33,000 in free physical education equipment and over 9,000 balls/jump ropes
  • 6,320 elementary students have taken the Heart Healthy Challenge: exercise for 60 minutes a day and choose heart healthy foods and drinks.  Research indicates that eating behaviors are established by third grade
  • HCPS is the number two organization/company in fundraising efforts supporting the AHA mission in the Tampa Bay area (including contiguous counties). HCPS ranks six nationally for district fundraising efforts
  • Since the CPR graduation requirement began in 2016/2017, over 36,000 high school students have been trained in the life-saving skill of CPR; 100 CPR kits have been donated to district middle and high schools
  • The AHA provides resources that are aligned with K-12 Physical Education Florida State Standards
