Description

Second Step is a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills curriculum for students in kindergarten through grade 8. The curriculum includes easy to teach classroom lessons that enhance student social-emotional competence by focusing on building SEL skills such as empathy and emotional management. This purchase will provide curriculum and bullying prevention kits to be used at 147 schools.  As stated in our district's mental health plan, Student Services leadership will explore and purchase evidence based programs to be used when providing direct services to students. These supplemental resources will be utilized by Student Services staff to meet the identified need of teaching SEL skills to students who have been identified through the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support with a need of behavioral and/or skill building interventions.

Review Comments

Programs are continuously evaluated through randomized control trials by a team of research scientists employed by the Committee for Children to ensure the programs produce their intended effects: promotion social emotional development, safety, and well-being of children. The Second Step curriculum has been implemented with kindergarten through grade 8 students at Project Prevent grant school sites throughout the duration of the grant. Participating site-based staff indicated a reduction in disciplinary concerns and an increase in social emotional intelligence of students receiving the curriculum.
