Title

A03 - Adoption of Proclamation - The Month of the Military Child, April 2020 (Deputy Superintendent, Instructional)

Description

In 1986, Secretary of Defense, Caspar W. Weinberger designated each April as "The Month of the Military Child." During this month, we honor our military families, especially our youngest heroes - the children, our students.

During "The Month of the Military Child," schools have been recognizing their military-connected students and their families' contributions to our country and community. These young heroes continue to inspire us despite the challenges they face due to their unique situation, such as having a parent deployed for extended periods, changing schools, and leaving friends. These students demonstrate their resilience through their achievements, successes, and contributions to the community in which they live.

Hillsborough County Public School planned to show appreciation and recognize the contribution of our military-connected students during the month of April.

• Participation in MacDill Air Force Base's Month of the Military Child Parade
• School Board Proclamation of Month of the Military Child – Representation at the meeting to include Wing Leadership, Staff from MAFB Family Readiness Center and School Age Program, Principals from schools with high military populations, and Hillsborough County' Military Inclusion Chair.
• Family Night at the Florida Aquarium for Tinker families
• Various school sites will host special events that include family breakfasts or lunches honoring military-connected students. Recognition of military-connected students on morning shows or through assemblies.
• Participation in Purple Up to show their appreciation for military-connected students.

While COVID-19 has put a hold on many events, one of the many lessons we learn from our military families is resiliency. During this time of e-learning, we will utilize social media to show our appreciation. Schools are encouraged to include a day to Purple Up in their school spirit days. Military families are asked to share in a 30-second video about what being a military kid means and share on social media with the hashtag #HCPSCelebtatesMOMC. Hillsborough PTA's Military Inclusion Chair will share graphics and facts about being a military kid.
