A03 - Recognition of Students with Perfect Attendance from Kindergarten Through the Twelfth Grade with the Support of Suncoast Credit Union and Toyota of Tampa Bay (Community Engagement, Philanthropy, and Outreach)

Description

Research has shown that school attendance, one of our key performance indicators, is the foundation of student achievement. Former Deputy Superintendent Beth Shields initiated an annual attendance program to recognize students who have maintained perfect attendance from kindergarten through twelfth grade while attending Hillsborough County Public School (HCPS). Our committed partners, Toyota of Tampa Bay and Suncoast Credit Union, will recognize ten seniors who have achieved perfect attendance for all thirteen years of school. The following seniors will receive the recognition prizes of a new laptop and scholarship:

  • Jaylyn Bido,  Riverview High School
  • Alexander Dyer, Newsome High School
  • Adaeze Echetebu, King High School
  • David Escamilla-Suqui, Plant City High School
  • Mark Grabau, Newsome High School
  • Madeline Ann Houston, Armwood High School
  • Gary Jones, Sickles High School
  • Rebekah Lorentzen, Durant High School
  • Franchelle Lundy, Blake High School
  • Julia Salvo, Bloomingdale High School

HCPS would also like to extend our gratitude and recognize our community partners, Toyota of Tampa Bay and Suncoast Credit Union, for their support of our students with exemplary attendance.  Each student recognized for perfect attendance will receive a computer and scholarship from Suncoast Credit Union.

Gap Analysis

According to the National Center for Education Statics, students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance.  High school graduation has been shown to have a direct, significant correlation to attendance. Differences in student absentee rates were observed as early as kindergarten, and students who eventually dropped out of high school missed significantly more days of school in first grade than their peers who graduated from high school.

Previous Outcomes

The following are outcomes for the District’s Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for attendance as “percent of students with 90 percent or higher attendance”: 2015/2016 - 86 percent, 2016/2017 - 85 percent, 2017/2018 - 83 percent, and 2018/2019 - 85 percent.

Expected Outcomes

At the end of each school year, the district conducts a search of the student database to determine seniors who qualify for the Perfect Attendance K-12 recognition.

Strategic Plan Goal

* Improve the high school graduation rate

* Improve Student Achievement

* Engage and communicate with families and stakeholders

* Demonstrate "best practices" in all aspects of safety: student, employee, visitor, facility, transportation, and health
