Title

B6.04 - Approve Amendment Three with Gaetz Aerospace Institute, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU), Inc. to Continue and Expand Offerings of Aerospace-Related Dual-Enrollment Courses (Academic Services)

Description

This amendment will continue the ERAU Aerospace Career Academy at Jefferson High School, Robinson High School, Steinbrenner High School, and Tampa Bay Technical High School.  ERAU will provide both teacher training and curriculum materials to implement this program. Aerospace Career Academy courses will be taught by current and adjunct teachers approved by mutual agreement of ERAU and Hillsborough County Public Schools and who will be credentialed and qualified to teach under the criteria established by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Gap Analysis

In the early 2000s, district leadership identified a gap between the demand for high school students to take aerospace-related dual-enrollment courses and the supply of those types of courses. This initiative fills that gap by offering these courses to introduce high school students to collegiate and professional trade level study with a focus on professional aeronautical topics leading to both high school graduation credits and college credits for courses completed, as well as industry certification.

Previous Outcomes

In 2019/2020, there were 117 students enrolled (with some duplicate enrollments) in ERAU dual-enrollment courses such as Principles of Aeronautics and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) at four high schools. Students in this program earned 31 industry certifications in Small UAS Safety Certification.

Expected Outcomes

In 2020/2021, it is expected that there will be 176 students enrolled (with some duplicate enrollments) in ERAU dual-enrollment courses, which is approximately 50 percent enrollment growth. In addition, the number of industry certifications is expected to increase by 10 percent.

Strategic Plan Goal

* Improve the high school graduation rate

* Provide a student-centered learning environment that engages every child

Recommendation

That the Board approve amendment three to the agreement with Gaetz Aerospace Institute, ERAU, Inc. to continue and expand offerings of aerospace-related dual-enrollment courses.

Financial Impact

Funds in the amount of $8,974 will be available in the Industry Certification budget, Projects 4565 and 4527. These funds are from weighted full time equivalent funds earned by previous student achievement in Industry Certification testing. Students in these ERAU dual-enrollment courses have the opportunity to achieve industry certification which would generate funding to use to continue this program in future school years.
