B6.17 - Approve the Arts in Education (AIE) Program Expenditures from October 21, 2020, through June 30, 2021 (Academic Services)
The AIE Program provides equity and access for students by infusing and integrating arts experiences into the school day. Standards-based arts experiences and student instruction is delivered through performances, workshops, and residencies, via both in-school and field trip experiences. Additional learning extensions are offered through teacher resource materials. On January 23, 2020, the District's Procurement Department issued a Request for Proposal 20004: Arts in Education Program Instructors for the purpose of identifying and contracting with service vendors for the AIE Program. If approved, this agenda item will provide for the planning and scheduling of services and subsequent Agreements for Technical Services, as needed, in support of the district's AIE Program. The attachment details select offerings in the AIE roster.
The 2015 Every Student Succeeds Act identifies the arts as essential subject areas within a well-rounded education. Students receiving an arts enriched education historically earn higher grade-point averages, score 100 points better on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, and have a dropout rate of 4 percent which is 5 times lower than their peers. This result holds true regardless of socioeconomic status helping to close the achievement gap and create equity for our students.
During the 2019-2020 school year, the AIE Program served 33,160 students and provided 889 services at 117 different sites. Efficacy of services is determined via teacher survey. In terms of increased student engagement and curricular support, 98 percent agree or strongly agree the services provided fulfilled these expectations.
Teachers will have the opportunity to select arts experiences for their students that support, enrich, and integrate with curriculum resulting in increased student engagement. Evaluation of programs will be conducted through service observations, teacher feedback surveys, and student reflections conducted where appropriate.
* Improve Student Achievement
* Provide a student-centered learning environment that engages every child
