Acknowledge the American Heart Association and its Long Standing Partnership with their Commitment to Heart Health and Wellness Initiatives Throughout the District (Outreach and School Improvement)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In the past year, HCPS leadership has been dedicated and devoted to working with the American Heart Association (AHA) on various heart initiatives that will benefit students, parents and the community. The Superintendent and the School Board has been recognized nationally for their innovative practices that not only aid the AHA in their mission to end heart disease and stroke, get kids active and healthy, but also fosters a culture of service-learning to this important cause in our school communities.   During the 2016-17 school year, Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) has exceeded expectations and benefitted in the following ways: 96,768 students and families received Heart Healthy messages that include lifesaving information on heart attack and stroke warning signs and symptoms HCPS raised over $327,123 for the fight against heart attack and stroke; this represents a 15% increase or $41,988 over last year’s fundraising efforts 107 elementary and middle schools successfully participated in the Jump/Hopes service learning program receiving over $20,000 in free PE equipment and over 7,000 balls/jump ropes 6,576 elementary students have taken the Heart Healthy Challenge: exercise for 60 minutes a day and choose heart healthy foods and drinks. Research indicates that eating behaviors are established by 3rd grade HCPS is the #2 organization/company in fundraising efforts supporting AHA mission in the Tampa Bay area (including contiguous counties). HCPS is #7 nationally for district fundraising efforts 126 PE teachers/staff are eligible to receive a SHAPE Florida/SHAPE America, professional organization membership Since the CPR graduation requirement began this school year (2016-17), over 13,000 high school students have been trained in the life-saving skill of CPR; 30 CPR kits have been donated to district high schools AHA provides resources that are aligned with K-12 Physical Education Florida State Standard  This program is fully aligned with the Building Strong School Culture model supported by the district. Participating in the AHA’s Service Learning Programs touch on four of the eight pillars outlined in our strategic plan.  All dollars raised help with the discovery of new treatments through research, legislative advocacy for our communities, student physical education, nutrition/wellness programs and CPR training courses for middle and high school students.

EVALUATION
AHA provides bi-monthly reports that include: wellness/health data, school participation, service-learning commitments, and goal progress data.
