Recognition of 2017 State Winner for the National History Day Competition (Office of Teaching and Learning)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The National History Day Competition program is recognized as the nation's oldest and most highly regarded humanities contest for students in grades 6 to 12, engaging over 500,000 students and 30,000 teachers annually.  This competition offers an authentic research experience for students to apply critical thinking, problem solving, research, and reading skills as they explore an annual theme. Students conduct research and present their findings as exhibits, documentaries, performances, websites, or research papers, competing at the local, state, and national level.  The top two state competitors in each category progress to the national competition held at the University of Maryland with the potential to win cash prizes and scholarships.

We are excited and honored to recognize Joseph Zachary (Zach) Juan, a ninth grader at Middleton High School, who competed at the 2017 State History Fair in Tallahassee last summer as an 8th grader from Williams Middle Magnet School. Zach won first place for his paper, Fred Korematsu's War Against Injustice, in the Junior Historical Paper category, and progressed to the national competition. His work explored how Mr. Korematus objected to the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, as it related to the theme, "Take a Stand."
