A01 -  Adoption of Proclamation - National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, July 2020 (Climate and Culture)

Description

Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health illness. Through education, our district aims to decrease stigma, provide resources, educate all stakeholders, emphasize the importance of culture and identity in the mental health movement, and advocate for policies that support our students and their families faced with mental health challenges. It has become increasingly evident that early intervention and education is the key to establishing healthy minds.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the CDC:

  • In 2017, 10.5% (3.5 million) of young adults age 18 to 25 had serious thoughts of suicide including 8.3% of non-Hispanic blacks and 9.2% of Hispanics
  • In 2017, 7.5% (2.5 million) of young adults age 18 to 25 had a serious mental illness including 7.6% of non-Hispanic Asians, 5.7% of Hispanics and 4.6% of non-Hispanic blacks.
  • Feelings of anxiety and other signs of stress may become more pronounced during a global pandemic.
  • People in some racial and ethnic minority groups may respond more strongly to the stress of a pandemic or crisis.

Formally recognized in June 2008, Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed each July and was created to bring awareness to the unique struggles that underrepresented groups face regarding mental illness in the United States.  The Student Services department would like to acknowledge the teams that address mental health concerns and promote emotional wellness in our district.  School Counseling Services, School Health Services, School Psychological Services, and School Social Work Services are available at every school.  In addition, our district Mental Health team promotes mental health awareness, prevention and intervention to students’ district-wide. Each Student Services team provides daily support to our students, individual/group counseling, classroom/large group in-service presentations, faculty and administration consultation, agency referrals, and also participates in parent conferences to support the whole child.
