SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Agreement for Technical Services with Professional Development for Achievement, Inc. for Middle School Writing Curriculum - $7,500 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A contract has been developed with Professional Development for Achievement, Inc. for the period January 3, 2006, through February 6, 2006, in the amount of $7,500. The consultants will develop and deliver writing lessons for teachers and students at three Title I schools – Franklin and Jennings middle schools and James K-8 school. Instruction provided to 550 Grade 8 students will stress the reading/writing connection with emphasis on elaboration in writing and short/long responses in reading. Students and teachers will see models of effective responses and will be taught how to effectively produce their own responses. Student work will be assessed weekly to ensure focused instruction.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 4 - The percentage of students achieving a score of 4.0 or higher on FCAT Writing will increase a minimum of 5 percentage points.
Goal 5 - The district will eliminate the FCAT achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Funds of $7,500 are included in the Title I budget, Project 1095.
