Veterans Observance Week

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Veterans Observance Week was established as a collaboration between the School Board of Hillsborough County and the Office of Veterans Affairs to provide students with an appreciation and understanding of sacrifices made by United States Veterans to guard our country and our way of life. Schools honored active and retired military personnel in observations including classroom activities, school wide assemblies, special ceremonies, unique morning show presentations, choral, speech, and poetry presentations, letters and cards, integrated social studies lessons, school staff veteran recognitions, speakers, displays, and breakfasts. Alonso and Tampa Bay Technical High Schools had especially moving memorial ceremonies honoring former students who died in Iraq and Corr Elementary School created a moving DVD to honor veterans related to students and staff. Schools sent care packages, postcards, bandanas, and artwork to our military personnel stationed overseas. Veterans at home were also the recipients of student created gifts. School Board receive the attached summary of school activities at all levels and a report on the volunteers supplied by SERVE.
