TEACHING AND LEARNING PRESENTATION

Focus on Student Achievement: Adult Education Family Literacy (Adult & Community Education)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Adult Education Family Literacy program recognizes that the home is where the cycle of learning begins. Since 2003, 3,968 adults and children have been served through the district's Adult Education Family Literacy program. Programs are currently offered at San Jose Mission in Dover, Beth-El Mission in Wimauma, Kimmins Corporation in Ybor City, University Area Community Center, St. John Presbyterian Church in West Tampa, Weed and Seed Center in Palm River, and Mort and Pizzo Elementary Schools.

The Family Literacy program integrates adult education, early childhood development, parenting sessions, and interactive parent-child activities. Developmental instruction for children is complemented with a time for parents and children to learn together.

The program provides opportunities for under-served adults and parents to obtain a high school diploma, English language skills, and improved workplace skills. The goal of the program is to enhance parents' ability to become full partners in their children's education.
