SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the Plan of Action for Grades 6-8 Student Stations at James

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Current feeder patterns into and out of James K-8 school has created some difficulties in providing our students with continuity and has pushed the capacity at James K-8 to 120%. This school was designed and constructed to be a K-5 school. Assigning middle school students to this school has created many challenges and unsatisfactory solutions to providing middle school stations in the central city. After reviewing possible solutions to this problem, the following plan of action has been determined to be the best solution.

  1. Close the middle school grade 6-8 program at James K-8 due to the inconsistent feeder patterns, lack of middle school facilities and overcrowding
  2. Determine all students who would be assigned in the 2006-2007 school year to James K-8 and based on their educational needs and location, offer each parent and student a personalized choice from the following under capacity schools: Ferrell Middle Magnet School, Stewart Middle Magnet School, Williams Middle Magnet School, Franklin Middle Magnet School, and Young Middle Magnet School
  3. This choice would involve individual guidance of the students and parents to ensure that they receive the selection they wanted.
