The Schoolwide Enrichment Model Reading (SEM-R) Framework Pilot is an enrichment-based reading program originated by the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented at the University of Connecticut. Supported by a strong research base, the SEM-R Program includes student-selected books that are slightly to moderately above individual reading levels to stimulate interest in and enjoyment of reading. The SEM-R Model will be piloted in one Grade 4 and one Grade 5 classroom at six elementary schools representative of the District’s cultural and socio-economic diversity. The schools are Bryan, Deer Park, Gorrie, MacFarlane Park, Anderson, and Lee.

Elizabeth Fogarty from the University of Connecticut will provide two full days of SEM-R professional development for the six identified school teams on June 19-20, 2006, and will be responsible for five days of follow-up training, coaching, observation, and site support.

Goal 1 - The percentage of students scoring at Level 3 or higher on FCAT Reading will increase a minimum of 5 percentage points.
Goal 5 – The District will close the FCAT achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

Funds of $9,637 are available from the K-12 Comprehensive Reading Plan, Project 4526.
