EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Safe Passage Act of the 2001 Legislature was passed to ensure every child a safe passage through Florida’s education system. The goal is for every district to have a clearly stated safety and security program that is effective, cost efficient and includes comprehensive plans and procedures promoting the safety and security of students and staff, ensuring that facilities and equipment are safe and in good working condition, and addressing the safe transportation of students. The purpose of this board agenda item is to assure that Hillsborough County Public Schools is in compliance with Section 1006.07(6), Florida Statutes, (F.S.), Safety and Best Practices. The first Best Practices were developed by OPPAGA and the Partnership for School Safety and Security and approved by the Commissioner of Education in 2001. Strategies and actions in this assessment were reviewed for the 2005-2006 school year by a district committee which included members from the Safety, School Security, Student Nutrition Services and Transportation Departments. The strategies and actions have been aligned with the District Strategic Plan of Work.
