Approve Addendum to Attachment A with the Center for Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program Establishing Blake High School as an AVID Site - $7,555 (Secondary Education)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On May 16, 2006, the School Board approved an Extension of Implementation Agreement with the Center for Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program for Plant City High School and Marshall and Tomlin Middle Schools. An Addendum to Attachment A of the agreement with AVID Center has been developed for the 2006/2007 school year to establish Blake High School as an AVID site. The addendum provides Blake High School with an AVID Curriculum Library and qualifies Blake High School teachers to participate in the 2006 AVID Summer Institute. The addendum outlines member roles, materials, training, and fees associated with the AVID Center.

AVID helps average academic, low socio-economic, first-generation College bound, and/or minority students to achieve the dream of going to college. The program equips the students with the necessary skills to be successful at both the high school and college levels by enrolling them into college preparatory courses, such as Advanced Placement and Honors. The AVID elective class offers academic support for the students. The students learn effective note-taking, study, and organizational skills. They receive career and college counseling, goal setting assistance, and extensive academic instruction. These components ensure that a student has every opportunity to be successful. AVID research has shown that this program increases the number of students enrolled in advanced placement courses and academic success in rigorous and relevant curricula.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 5 – The district will close the FCAT achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Funds of $7,555 for the annual membership fee and AVID Curriculum Library are included in the Hillsborough Advanced Placement Incentive Program budget, Project 1025.
