SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the Agreement for Technical Services for John Marinake of Herff Jones Education Division to Provide Social Studies and Literacy Training to the Instructional Staff at Thonotosassa Elementary (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This training will build a solid foundation of social studies skills and concepts. It will emphasize responsible citizenship, develop multicultural awareness and sensitivity, and reinforce reading, writing, math and science. Students will develop critical thinking skills with a curriculum that provides activities to stimulate a variety of intelligences that assures success for all students. All materials apply age-appropriate reading skills in content areas using nonfiction and expository text passages. Students will use hands-on materials, reference tools, and graphic organizers. Writing is incorporated to pull ideas together using a variety of writing responses. These materials will also enrich the existing Social Studies program, History Alive. One Exploring Where and Why Kit will be provided for each grade level to share. Included in these kits are class packs of desk maps, six small globes that students can write on, a class set of atlases, a large floor map and a teacher's guide. All lessons integrate reading and writing. Some lessons also integrate mathematics and science. Materials are included in the price of the contract. Thonotosassa Elementary will be able to keep all materials mentioned at the conclusion of the training for use with students. This curriculum will address Thonotosassa’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals by giving teachers and students an opportunity to explore many engaging activities that include current Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) skills. Having this program for K-5 will create consistency through the grade-levels and the primary students will be better prepared for the intermediate skills needed.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 5- The district will eliminate the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

This technical service agreement will be paid out of Thonotosassa’s Title I funds. It includes the cost of the trainer and the training materials. ($6,593.00)

EVALUATION

Throughout the year data will be collected, analyzed, and teachers will guide their instruction based on student progress. This will allow the staff to determine the effectiveness of this program for intervention and enrichment of students. At the conclusion of the 2006-07 school year, a determination will be made of overall program effectiveness by analyzing student data and surveying teachers. The results will be shared with the vendor and be used for future contract consideration.
