SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the Protocols and Guidelines for Students with Life Threatening Allergies (LTA) Manual (see attached), Effective August 9, 2006 (Student Services & Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On June 19, 2005, Governor Bush signed the Kelsey Ryan Act (HP 279) into law. This law allows students with life threatening allergens to carry and self-administer medications. As a result, key stakeholders met to develop the attached protocols and guidelines for best practices for Hillsborough County Schools. The purpose of the Protocols and Guidelines Manual is to provide a system-wide set of procedures for Hillsborough County Public School employees. In addition, the Protocols and Guidelines Manual will serve as a tool that may be used to educate the community, prepare for allergic reactions, life threatening allergic reactions, and respond appropriately to allergic emergencies that may arise at a school site. The protocol guidelines delineate responsibilities of school-based key personnel involved in assuring the safety and well being of students.
