SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Concept for Development of Facilities Usage Agreement with Mary Help of Christians School for a District SUCCESS ACADEMY for At-Risk Youth

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Preliminary information has been developed for the possibility of a joint venture with Mary Help of Christians School to develop a district public school for up to 500 at-risk youth at the Mary Help of Christians School facility located at 6400 East Chelsea Street, Tampa, FL 33610. The concept is to provide a districtwide facility for students, ages 14-18, who are at risk of dropping out due to academic or behavioral challenges. For identification purposes, the school is referred to as the Success Academy. A summary of the Success Academy concept is attached.

With approval of the concept by the School Board, district administration, facilities, and curriculum staff will pursue the feasibility of a facilities usage agreement with Mary Help of Christians School for the Success Academy. Consideration will include possible relocation of one or more existing alternative education programs to the Success Academy. Detailed information and cost analyses will be developed including existing program facilities costs, financial obligations, and benefits to programs for at-risk students.
