EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
On July 15, 2006, The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Tampa Bay presented awards to architects in various categories. The awards recognize excellence in architectural design. Nine projects were selected from 58 total submissions. Of those nine projects, two were Hillsborough County Schools.
Earning an Honor Award (highest award given) for Architecture in the Historic Renovation Category was the Hillsborough County School Board's Hillsborough High School by Wilder Architecture, Inc. It was noted that this project was a "matter of peeling back years of renovations while still maintaining the historical fabric." The jury stated that "this honor is also for the school board as much as the architect for their ability to devote resources and time to this building."
Earning an Honor Award for Architecture in the Institutional Category was the Bowers-Whitley Career Center designed by Holmes Hepner & Associates Architects. The jury noted "there was a huge amount of site work and architectural space making."
