SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve the Standard Contract Between the State of Florida, Department of Health, and the School District of Hillsborough County for Participation in the STEPS to a Healthier Hillsborough Grant Initiative (Student Services & Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This is the third year of a five year grant. It is designed to address the issues of asthma, diabetes, obesity, nutrition, physical activity and tobacco with under-served populations. Submitted through the Hillsborough County Health Department, it is highly collaborative and provides support for intervention activities within the school system. The School District will receive $269,961.30 from the Hillsborough County Health Department to support two staff members, health education activities and data collection.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 5 – The District will eliminate the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind. Goal 6 - All schools in the district will be assigned a state grade of A, B, or C.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

$269,961.30 - STEPS grant dollars are generated through the Center for Disease Control (federal) and are contracted through the Hillsborough County Health Department. The District functions as a subcontractor for the project.

EVALUATION

The STEPS grant evaluation is done annually. The next evaluation will be conducted on December 22, 2006.
