Approve Agreement for Technical Services with Lucinda Collins to Produce Braille Textbooks - $35,000 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Florida Instructional Materials Center for the Visually Impaired (FIMC-VI) is funded by the Florida Department of Education, and the School District of Hillsborough County serves as the fiscal agent. The Center is charged with providing statewide materials’ services to Florida school districts.

An Agreement for Technical Services has been developed for Lucinda Collins to transcribe state-adopted textbooks and workbooks for students requiring Braille. The consultant is certified by the Library of Congress and has the necessary knowledge and experience with the Literary Braille Code and with “Braille Formats: Principles of Print to Braille Transcription, 1997.” The consultant has successfully performed these Braille transcription functions to the satisfaction of Florida’s blind students, their teachers, and their school districts for several years.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 1 – The percentage of students scoring at Level 3 or higher on FCAT reading will increase a minimum of 5 percentage points.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Funds of $35,000 are included in district special revenue/federal programs budget through Project 1217, Florida Instructional Materials Center for the Visually Impaired. There is no additional cost to the District.
