SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Adoption of Proclamation - “Career and Technical Education Month” - February 2007 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The National Association for Career and Technical Education, the Florida Association for Career and Technical Education, and the Hillsborough Technical, Career, and Adult Association have designated the month of February 2007, as "Career and Technical Education Month." The theme for this year’s recognition is “Career Tech – Today an Education, Tomorrow a Career.”

As an integral part of our district school-to-career transition system, career awareness begins in our elementary schools; career and technical programs continue in middle and senior high schools and extend through our adult programs. Our technical laboratories and programs are exemplary and provide graduates the skills for job placement and continuing education. Our workforce development programs for adults provide skills updating, career opportunities, and continuing education. Business and industry send their employees to be trained by our staff and one reason cited for locating new businesses to this county is the high quality of career and technical programs. We appreciate the effective partnerships with chambers of commerce and with business and industry.

We invite all interested individuals to visit Career and Technical programs. During this focus month, staff members and students will be involved in various career awareness activities which include job fairs, media promotions, and open house events. Erwin Technical Center is scheduling visitations and presentations at various Hillsborough County schools. Brewster Technical Center will be conducting school-wide presentations and conducting teacher appreciation activities. Learey Technical Center is hosting a continental breakfast in the rotunda to celebrate and show appreciation to faculty, staff, and students. Aparicio-Levy Technical Center is offering an annual Job and Career Fair and a recognition event for their advisory committees.
