EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In June 2003, the district conducted the first “Accomplished Teaching Academy.” This was an outstanding four-day professional development opportunity designed for good teachers who seek an even higher level of professional excellence. The Academy was planned by a Task Force composed of district and school personnel and the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association. This Task Force spent more than a year reviewing educational research and developing a framework around the propositions of National Board certification. During the Academy, school teams of teachers immerse themselves in the research of best instructional practices, interact with nationally known experts in education, and ultimately develop an action plan for establishing a learning community at their school site. The success of these school initiatives has led to such developments as expansion of reading and writing instructional best practices, implementation of study groups, and formation of a ninth grade personal development program. The 2004 Academy was renamed to honor Dr. Kevin McCarthy for his involvement and all the Best Practices for which he stood.
June 2005, will be the third year the district has offered the Academy. On June 6, 156 teachers in Cadre II from last year will return for sessions to Reconnect, Review and Remotivate. Cadre III will meet June 7-10 and will include more than 350 teachers representing 70 schools.ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)
