EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Athletics is more than competition. It is, rather, a means of learning a way of life with the philosophy that discipline, good character, and hard work will bring eventual success. Athletic participation in Special Olympics will be a positive force in preparing our students for an enriching and vital role in society.
Special Olympics Florida, founded in 1972, provides year-round sports training and athletic competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Florida is divided into eleven area programs, which covers over 55 counties and serves over 15,000 athletes throughout the state. Through successful sports training and competition, Special Olympics Florida athletes develop physically, socially, and psychologically. Positive experiences through Special Olympics Florida programs build confidence and self-image with the athletes and carries over into other aspects of their lives.
Varsity letters may be earned by meeting or exceeding the lettering criteria established for the various Special Olympic programs and activities sponsored by Hillsborough County Public Schools. This distinct honor rewards participation and personal character. Criteria include conduct, attendance, and participation.
Following approval by the School Board, the Athletic Guidebook of Procedures will be updated on the district website.
