Approve Amendment to the ADULT EDUCATION AND FAMILY LITERACY STATE LEADERSHIP, GED PRACTITIONERS TASK FORCE Grant, 2006/2007, Additional Funds - $36,000 (Adult and Community Education)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On October 19, 2006, the Florida Department of Education Division of Community Colleges and Workforce Education awarded the district the statewide General Educational Development (GED) Practitioner Task Force (PTF) grant in the amount of $150,000 for the period July 1, 2006, through June 30, 2007.

If approved, this Amendment to the grant provides the district with an additional $36,000 for a new grant total of $186,000. The additional grant funds have been earmarked by the DOE to implement the Florida GED Mathematics Initiative.

Grant funds will be used to develop contracts with two consultants to provide training to 20 regional trainers on the GED Mathematics Initiative, to provide travel reimbursement for the consultants and trainers, and funding for supplies and training materials.

The Task Force is comprised of representatives from state Adult Education programs, Florida Department of Education (DOE), ACE of Florida, regional training councils, regional and state literacy resource centers, and the Florida Distance Learning Consortium. The district serves as the fiscal agent for the PTF grant and is the lead in the development of updated GED curriculum frameworks and associated resource materials, updated technical assistance papers, identification of necessary teacher training and staff development in GED Prep programs, and research ideas for improvement of GED completions and post-GED transitions to postsecondary programs and/or gainful employment.
