Approve Agreement for Technical Services with Performance Learning Systems, Inc., for Competency 1 - Foundations of Language and Cognition "Train the Trainer" Training, K-12 "Learning to Read" Course - $15,567 (Information and Technology Information Division)

An Agreement for Technical Services has been developed with Performance Learning Systems, Inc. for the services of Diana Brown and Tom Sanders to design and deliver a Foundations of Language and Cognition “Train the Trainer” course for Reading Endorsement Competency 1. Participants will attend seven full-days of training scheduled March 15 -16, 2007, April 12-13, 26-27, 2007, and May 18, 2007.

The consultants will prepare 20 teachers who, after completing the training, will train additional teachers in the K-12 “Learning to Read” course which provides teachers with a broad and deep knowledge base for Reading Endorsement Competency 1. Training includes research-based seminars on a balanced and integrated reading process, phonological awareness, decoding instruction, fluency, comprehension, assessment, and intervention.

Goal 1 - The percentage of students scoring at Level 3 or higher on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test for reading will increase a minimum of 5 percentage points.
Goal 5 - The district will close the FCAT achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

Funds of $15,567 are included in the Comprehensive Reading Plan Budget, Project 4526.

The District Resource Teacher will review student FCAT NRT results and reading progress monitoring data for teachers attending the Competency 1 Workshop.
