Recognition of School Crossing Guard Ralph Joyner for His Heroism in Protecting Students in Danger

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On the morning of March 8, 2007, crossing guard Ralph Joyner was helping a group of students from Mort Elementary School cross the busy Bearss Avenue to get to school. Ten or more students were in the crosswalk when Mr. Joyner noticed a car approaching that showed no signs of stopping, despite a stop light. Mr. Joyner rushed to get the students out of the roadway. Fourth-grader Maryam El-Noursi was inches from the safety of the curb when the car struck her. All the other children were shepherded to safety by Mr. Joyner. Maryam was taken to the hospital where her injuries were treated. She returned to school on Monday. The driver of the car was charged with DUI. Superintendent MaryEllen Elia is requesting that the School Board recognize Ralph Joyner for his quick thinking and heroism in the face of danger, and for the work he does every day to keep our students safe.
