Approve Professional Development Sponsor Agreement with Hope Foundation, Inc. for Presentation at the Dr. Kevin McCarthy Accomplished Teaching Academy, June 8, 2007 - $6,450 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A Professional Development Sponsor Agreement has been developed with Hope Foundation, Inc. for the services of Stephen Peters to design, develop, and train high performing teachers through the Accomplished Teaching Academy scheduled for June 5-8, 2007, at Jefferson High School. The agreement was reviewed and approved by Tom Gonzalez, School Board Attorney.

The provider will train new and returning teachers on current trends and techniques in delivery of instruction and will conduct a session on "Why We Must Give Children Hope" on June 8, 2007. Approximately 450 teachers and 94 principals will participate and develop action plans for improving student achievement that will be implemented during the 2007/2008 school year. These plans and their implementation will be shared with other teachers during the Accomplished Teaching Academy in June 2008.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 5 – The District will close the FCAT achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Funds of $5,450 are included in the department budget for Elementary Education, Project 4502; and funds of $1,000 for the deposit are included in the Accomplished Teaching Academy internal account at Jefferson High School (host school).

EVALUATION

October 2007. Teachers will be surveyed to collect qualitative data to capture relevant information about each day’s activities. The survey results are presented in a report each October following the professional development experience.
