Approve Agreement for Technical Services with Technology Educators for K-5 Science Teachers Summer Workshop, May 30 - June 1, 2007 - $3,000 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

We are requesting approval of the Agreement for Technical Services with Technology Educators for the services of Larry Chew to provide training for 40 science teachers, Grades K-5, May 30 - June 1, 2007, at Lee Elementary.

Training will be provided for three days, 6 hours per day. Training content includes demonstrations of hands-on activities to ensure lessons qualify as inquiry; instruction in how to ask leading questions; and how to relate inquiry to grade-level content. Teachers will learn to take textbook and labs resources and modify them to be more inquiry based. Workshop activities are designed for classroom teachers to utilize science best practices and relate them to instructional delivery to increase student knowledge of science content and process. Technology Educators will provide all of the handouts and hands-on materials for the workshop.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 3 - Student performance on FCAT science will increase a minimum of 5 percentage points.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Funds of $3,000 are included in the departmental budget for Elementary Education, Project 4502.

EVALUATION

May 2008. 2008 FCAT science scores for students of participants will be analyzed to determine effectiveness of training.
