Approve Agreements for Technical Services for Consultants for the Elementary Summer Reading Trainings, June 11-29, 2007 - $76,600.20 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

We are requesting approval of the attached list of Agreements for Technical Services with Elementary teachers to develop and/or revise 140 hours of reading training for K-5 teachers. All teachers are highly trained in the area of reading and have also demonstrated outstanding trainer abilities.

This high-quality professional development is designed to enhance teacher understanding of the reading process, the essential elements of reading and the use of best practices in the classroom. These trainings will impact approximately 1,500 classroom teachers. Trainings will be conducted at Corr, Mabry and Mort Elementary Schools from June 11-29, 2007. Each of the 53 K-5 courses will be focused on scientifically-based reading research and the essential elements of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

Goal 1 – The percentage of students scoring at Level 3 or higher on FCAT reading will increase a minimum of 5 percentage points.

Funds of $76,600.20 are available in the general operating budget through the K-12 Comprehensive Reading Plan, Project 4526 (trainers - $61,755.20) and Elementary Reading, Project 6053 (writers - $14,845).

May 2008. 2008 FCAT reading scores for students of participants will be analyzed to determine effectiveness of training.
