SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Submission of Grant Application to the Agency for Workforce Innovation, and if Awarded, Accept Funds for Development of an “Employ Florida Banner Center,” 2007/2008 - $500,000 (Adult Technical Education – Aparicio-Levy and Learey Technical Centers)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

We are requesting approval to submit a grant application for the development of an “Employ Florida Banner Center” in Hillsborough County. “Employ Florida Banner Center” grants fund the development of industry-driven training centers for specific industry sectors. The industry sector targeted for this grant application is Alternative Energy, which includes renewable energy systems such as solar, hydrogen, biomass, wind, ocean current, biodiesel, ethanol, and other emerging technologies.

School district technical centers are eligible to submit proposals to become banner centers. Each banner center must provide a train-the-trainer program, as well as offer customized employee training for the industry; Aparicio-Levy Technical Center specializes in customizing curriculum and responding rapidly to corporate client training needs.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

This is a performance-based grant. If awarded, up to $500,000 in grant funds will be paid to the District for performance of services, as they are delivered.

EVALUATION

Success will be based on performances and delivery of services sufficient to draw down payments against the grant award.
