SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Workshop Payroll for Trainers/Facilitators of the District's New Teacher Orientation to be Held at East Bay High School July 31 - August 3, 2007 (Information and Technology Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Each year the Hillsborough County Public Schools' Staff Development Office provides New Teacher Orientation (NTO) training for all of our newly-hired teachers, as well as for those teachers hired after NTO the previous school year. NTO provides these teachers with a welcome and induction into our district, along with research-based best practices training in classroom management, instructional delivery and Code of Ethics.

During New Teacher Orientation, participants are grouped by schools for small group sessions. Each group of new teachers is trained by a district teacher who has been through extensive training in both the content they deliver and in group facilitation strategies. New trainers are paired with veteran facilitators in order to demonstrate a model of team teaching for our new hires as well as a wide array of real-world classroom examples and information. The facilitators on the attached list have all received this training.

The number of teachers who will attend NTO changes daily as we approach the end of July and hiring in our schools continues. In order to provide an adequate number of trainers for our new teachers, permission is requested to add or delete trainers as needed, not to exceed the budgeted amount of $124,292.52.

EVALUATION

Teachers complete an evaluation of New Teacher Orientation at its conclusion. This data is used to determine the effectiveness of the training and to modify the training for the subsequent year. In addition, the Staff Development Office will track the retention rate of teachers who attend New Teacher Orientation to determine the success of the training.
