SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Grant Application to the Division of Community Colleges and Workforce Education and, if approved, accept funds for SUCCEED Florida - Nursing Education, 2005-2006 - $87,541 (Adult Technical Education)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Florida Legislature recognizes the need to increase the capacity of nursing programs approved by the Board of Nursing at public and private postsecondary educational institutions to produce more nurses to enter the workforce in Florida. Competitive funding has been appropriated to focus on one or more of the following: incease enrollment capacity; increase the faculty pool; recruit and retain faculty; initiate innovative practices in clinical education; expand clinical sites; partner in joint use of facilities; institute innovative curriculum or instructional delivery; and provide a career ladder for nurses. Erwin Technical Center and Brewster Technical Center have created a model to retain more students, thus producing more Licensed Practical Nurse graduates. Their data show that students tend to drop out at two critical points in their program: pharmaceutical medications and anatomy and physiology. To address these areas of instruction, a prerequisite will be instituted in medical terminology and medical math. Funding from the grant will be used for part-time teacher salary and appropriate classroom equipment as well as tuition, fees, and books for the students.
