SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Activities Calendar for Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, 2005-2006

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) calendar is presented annually during the month of August. The attached calendar from the Senior Ranking Officer, Colonel Howard Swanson, includes activities that identify JROTC curricular activities October 2005 through September 2006. JROTC activities are an integral part of the JROTC curriculum. Through involvement in JROTC activities, students are able to make more meaningful career choices, reinforce occupational knowledge and skills, strengthen leadership capabilities, and improve personal attributes. Students also gain from their participation in JROTC because of the recognition they receive, the confidence-building activities they undertake, and the opportunities to utilize practical and academic learning. Because JROTC integrates their training/curricular, our community views this program as a significant source of well-prepared young men and women. Approval of this calendar expedites the procedure for students to participate in related JROTC activities in-county and out-of-county and allows schools the option to participate. The extent of participation will be determined by available district funds and other resources provided by the Armed Forces.

The activities for the JROTC Department require the JROTC cadets to travel and/or be absent from their classrooms. The list of activities include units from the Army - 7 units, Navy - 8 units, Air Force – 6 units, and Marines - 1 unit. The district has increased the number of JROTC units from last year - Army - 1 units and Air Force - 4 units. This district has also increased the number of schools with JROTC programs from 17 to 22. The number of students participating in the program during the 2004-2005 school year was 2,574.
