SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Land Lease Between the School Board of Hillsborough County and the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration at Pierce Middle School

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In May 1991, the School Board of Hillsborough County approved a land lease ("Exhibit A") with the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Authority (the FAA) for a small portion of land located at Pierce Middle School. The FAA has requested an additional term beginning October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011, with the right to automatically renew until no later than September 30, 2030 ("Exhibit B").

The purpose of the original lease and the renewal is to grant the FAA permission to install a tower on the School property to support the Low-Level Wind Shear Alert System (LLWAS) facility. This equipment is used to detect wind speed and direction to provide safer operation of commercial aircraft at Tampa International Airport. The tower is still located at the School and will continue to be used for the LLWAS program by the FAA.

The land lease has been reviewed by the School Board Attorney as to form and sufficiency.
