Approve Grant Applications to the Following: Allen Foundation, Inc.; Verizon Foundation; Hillsborough County Children’s Services; Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Health Literacy Grant Initiative, A Statewide Initiative Managed by the Florida Literacy Coalition; Target Store Grants Program; and if Approved, Accept Funds for Adult and Community Education Programs Districtwide, 2010 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

We request approval to submit grant applications to the following agencies for supplemental funds to enhance the delivery of basic and English literacy, family literacy, health literacy, and employability skills training for adult students:

• $50,000 Allen Foundation, Inc.
• $25,000 Verizon Foundation
• $9,998 Hillsborough County Children's Services
• $5,000 Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Health Literacy Grant Initiative
• $2,000 Target Store Grants Program

The respective agencies have earmarked specific community-based programs and services located within their geographic service areas that they support through grant funds.

The Department of Adult and Community Education offers programs to assist adults in becoming literate and obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency; to assist adults who are parents in obtaining the educational skills necessary to become full partners in the educational development of their children; and to assist adults in completing high school or the equivalent. We anticipate serving up to 250 adult students and their families through these grant projects.

All Strategic Objectives

Grant funds of $91,998 will be included in the divisional special revenue/federal programs budget. All direct and indirect costs are included in the grant budget.

Evaluation measures required by the granting agencies include a mid-year or mid-project report and a final report at the end of the projects.
