Approve Contract for A.T. Jones Academy for Math, Science, and Technology

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Charter school legislation, 1002.33., F.S., permits individuals, organizations and community members the opportunity to submit an application to the School Board for the creation of a charter school. On December 8, 2009, the School Board approved the application for A. T. Jones Academy for Math, Science, and Technology. The school will serve students in grades K-5. The curricular focus will be on math, science, and technology.

A copy of the proposed four year contract for the school is attached. The original charter application approved by the School Board will become Appendix I of this contract and will be available for review in the School Board Office. The school's academic goals and objectives are found in Appendix II.

In the event there is a discrepancy between the contract and the charter application, the terms of the contract will prevail. A. T. Jones Academy for Math, Science, and Technology has agreed to all the terms of the contract, which has been revised to include the most recent revisions to 1002.33, F.S.

A copy of the application review summary is attached indicating where weaknesses are addressed in the contract. A founding board member is required to attend the DOE required training prior to opening.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

The charter school's first year enrollment projection of 322 students will generate approximately $2,083,600 in FEFP (Part I) funds. The District retains five (5) percent of these funds as an administrative fee to support services provided by the District. The school will also qualify for categorical, capital outlay and grant funds as appropriate and allowed by Florida Statutes.
