SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Extend the Subagreement Between Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) and the University of South Florida (USF), as Part of USF’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Comprehensive School Health Programs to Prevent Important Health Problems, Agreement #6405-1031-00-A (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Centers for Disease Control awarded $526,636 to USF for the Comprehensive School Health Programs to Prevent Important Health Problems, entitled Community-Based Prevention Marketing and Technology Based Physical Activity, which targets childhood obesity. Of that amount, $76,073 was allocated to HCPS for activities to support the grant program. The project established a technology-based “Exegaming Center” at Witter Elementary School, and funded the implementation and oversight of obesity prevention programs at Robles and Sulphur Springs Elementary Schools. These schools were targeted by HCPS Supervisor of K-12 Physical Education and Health, Steve Vanoer, who oversees the project. Funds were allocated for a part-time prevention specialist to coordinate project tasks between USF and HCPS, obesity program coordinators at each of the schools, facility rental for use of HCPS facilities for meetings and trainings, and incentives for focus group and survey participants. The project period ended August 24, 2009. This agreement extends the project to December 31, 2009. Due to an oversight, the agreement was delayed until now in reaching the district.
