SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Termination of Contract with Literacy/Leadership/Technology Academy High School (Non-Traditional Programs - Division of Administration)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On March 18, 2008, the Hillsborough County School Board approved a five-year contract with Literacy/Leadership/Technology Academy High School (LLT High School). The contract commenced on July 1, 2008, and was scheduled to be in place until June 30, 2013.

Due to the current economic concerns and budget issues, the LLT High School Board met on March 3, 2010, to discuss the future of the school. The Board reached the decision to close the high school at the end of the 2009-2010 school year for the following three reasons: limit of student enrollment due to road issues, budget cuts impacting the educational program, and decreased middle school enrollment due to capacity allowed on property caused by county requirements to the traffic pattern surrounding the school. Attached is a letter from the board chair and CEO confirming their action.

The middle school, Literacy/Leadership/Technology Academy (LLT) has been successful since they opened in 2005. The school received a state calculated grade of an "A" for the 2008-2009 school year. The LLT Board is committed to providing the middle school students with excellence and the skills to prepare them for the future. The decision to close the high school will allow them to focus on the middle school and continue to provide a quality education.

LLT High School currently has 101 students enrolled. The district staff will work closely with the charter school and the families to ensure that all students will be supported to make a smooth transition to their next school setting.
