EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Tampa and St. Petersburg Chambers of Commerce first established the Tony Jannus Distinguished Aviation Society in 1964. Continuing its tradition of supporting the future of aviation, the Society encourages students’ interest in the aviation industry and rewards deserving students through the Tony Jannus Essay Contest. The contest is open to all Florida students in grades 6-12.

The Society has selected Plant City High School sophomore Kathleen Hencke as the 2009 Tony Jannus Essay Contest winner. Ms. Hencke’s essay, “The History of Commercial Aviation,” focused on advancements in aviation and airline technology. Ms. Hencke will receive three round-trip airline tickets from a Florida city to any destination served by that airline, plus a $600 spending allowance.
