This Memorandum of Understanding is in effect August 1, 2010 through July 31, 2011. The University of South Florida College of Education division will provide and host two series of five day summer institutes to twenty Leto High School students at the university to learn about service learning through participatory action research. Service Learning is an instructional strategy that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum based learning. Through participation in service learning activities, students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the real world. The participants in this summer institute will explore issues pertinent to their school and community, identify a particular topic of interest, learn about and conduct research on the topic, and produce a video documentary on the topic to share with their community. The school district will select the participants, provide transportation, and reproduce instructional materials for the institutes. The university will develop the curriculum, provide the facilities, instructors, and conduct the training.

All Strategic Objectives

Transportation costs and course materials of approximately $1500 will be paid from Title I funds.

Program services will be evaluated on an annual basis for each participant’s academic success.
