Recognition of National Science Bowl Team - Durant High School (Secondary Education-Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that tests students' knowledge in all areas of science. High school and middle school students are quizzed in a fast-paced question-and-answer format similar to Jeopardy.

DOE launched its National Science Bowl competition in 1991 to encourage high school students to excel in science and mathematics and to pursue careers in those fields. The National Science Bowl now involves more than 13,000 high school students who participate in teams of 4 to 5 players at regional competitions across the United States and Puerto Rico. Regional winners are invited to compete at the national competition held in Washington, DC. The National Science Bowl is the only science competition in the United States sponsored by a federal agency.

The Durant High School team participated in a double elimination tournament in which it placed 18th in the nation. This was the second consecutive trip for a team from Durant High School to go the National Science Bowl.
