Approve Tentative Settlement of Tony A. Jones v. Hillsborough County Public Schools.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The School Board attorney recommends approval of the tentative settlement agreement of this lawsuit, which was brought by Tony A. Jones, and authorization by the Chair to execute the agreement (attached). Mr. Jones alleged that the School Board failed to hire him for a lunchroom aide position based on a perceived disability in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The parties tentatively settled this lawsuit at mediation August 11, 2010.
The tentative agreement obligates the School Board to pay $2,000 to Mr. Jones, an amount which is less than the estimated costs of further defense. Mr. Jones will forego employment with the district in the future, and will release all claims against the district. The School Board attorney believes the settlement would be in the best interest of the district.
