SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS
Approve Agreements for Technical Services for Elementary Writing Trainers, 2007/2008 - $78,803 (Curriculum and Instruction Division)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
We request approval of the attached list of trainers who will plan, conduct, and provide follow-up support for elementary writing teachers at various locations throughout the District beginning October 3, 2007, through June 30, 2008.
The District is committed to providing training for teachers to enhance their content and pedagogy knowledge in the area of language arts/writing to impact student achievement. The focus of writing training includes best practice using Writers’ Workshop, Sunshine State Standards, the writing process, and driving instruction based on the needs of students.
Courses to be offered include:
- Literature and Lessons: Putting it All Together in Writers’ Workshop and Gone Gooney Over Writers’ Craft
- FCAT Writes+: Think Outside the Bubble, The Magic of Units Through Writing Workshop, and Primary Units of Study
- Growing Independence During Writing Workshop: Conferencing and Elaboration, and Modeling Writing for Young Writers
- Tools for Writing: Notebooks, Portfolios, and Word Walls
- Sharpen the Pencil: Conferencing and Revision, Bearly a 3 to a 4 or More, and Growing Young Writers K-1.
In order to effectively provide the training, permission is requested to add and delete facilitators as needed, not to exceed the budget of $78,803.
ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)
Goal 5 – The District will close the FCAT achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)
Funds of $78,803 for Elementary Writing Trainings are included as follows: divisional budget for Elementary Title II ($38,847), Project 1380; and Elementary Title I ($39,956), Project 1395.
EVALUATION
The Department of Staff Development will conduct teacher evaluation surveys at the conclusion of each training.
