SUBJECT / RECOMMENDATIONS

Approve Agreement for Technical Services with Dale Carnegie Training Tampa Bay to Conduct Goal Setting Coaching Seminar to 70 Ninth-Grade King High School Career Academy of Robotics and Multimedia Design Students (Curriculum and Instruction Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

We request approval for Dale Carnegie Training Tampa Bay to meet with teachers to design a one-day goal setting initiative seminar for 70 ninth-grade Career Academy of Robotics and Multimedia students in order to increase student success behaviors such as attendance, homework completion, study habits, and other behaviors leading to academic success.

The theme of a one-day “kick off” seminar on October 26, 2007, is that a “can do attitude” will shape their high school experience into a positive and successful time in their lives. The provider fee includes planning meetings (3 hours at a value of $150), materials for students (books and handbook $45 per student, or $3,150), goal setting follow-up materials and certificates ($25 per student, or $1,750); and, a one-day multiple speaker seminar presentation during the school day in the auditorium at King High School. The presentation will be divided up into four sections, and follow-up materials for students and teachers will be provided at that time. Students will be coached to write, and to commit to follow through on a specific achievable goal within the week following the seminar.

"On-track" students (successfully completing their goal) will receive an incentive award and then be challenged to write up a 30-day goal; "off-track" or non-successful students will be coached to work on a new 5-day, week-long goal, and monitored for achievement. This process will continue throughout the rest of the school year with the support of all five Career Academy faculty members and the joint homeroom period in which all 70 students have been scheduled for the 2007/2008 school year.

ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)

Goal 1 – The percentage of students scoring at Level 3 or higher on FCAT reading will increase a minimum of 5 percentage points.
Goal 5 – The district will eliminate the FCAT achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)

Funds of $6,650 ($95 per student) are available from Perkins Federal Grant.

EVALUATION

Pre- and post-seminar student surveys will assess student comprehension of basic self-motivation behaviors and practices for goal and task follow through and completion success. Students’ self-selected 7-day and 30-day goals or action plan will be individually tracked by homeroom teachers after the seminar to coach, encourage, reinforce, record, and reward student successes during the school year.
