Approve the Naming of the Gymnasium at Hillsborough High School

The Hillsborough High School alumni, staff, community members, and students of Hillsborough High School have requested that the newly renovated gymnasium at Hillsborough High School be named the Don Williams Athletic Center in honor of former basketball coach and teacher at Hillsborough High School, Don Williams. He began his employment with the Hillsborough County School System in 1953 as a pre-flight aeronautics mathematics teacher. He was the head basketball coach at Hillsborough High School from 1954 to 1962. As a coach he led the Hillsborough High School basketball team to its last state championship in 1959. He retired from the school system in 1969 and became the first head basketball coach at the University of South Florida. The alumni, staff, community members and students would like to celebrate and honor his tireless dedication to teach, coach, and mentored students to succeed. Coach Williams is 84 years old and currently lives in Zephyrhills, Florida.

Other: This is in accordance with Policy 8.27 (Procedure Summary) which governs that school sites and facilities shall be named for individuals who have rendered outstanding public service education, for geographical locations and for groups and clubs as indicated. Elementary, middle and secondary schools - for presidents, school board members, educators, outstanding citizens and geographical locations.

There is no cost to the school district for the naming of the gymnasium.
