Approve Agreement for Technical Services with Stephanie Harvey Consulting for the Services of Stephanie Harvey - $8,802.05 (Curriculum and Instruction)

We request approval of the Agreement for Technical Services with Stephanie Harvey Consulting, Inc. to provide staff development for reading resource teachers, reading coaches, reading teachers, and district-level staff members.

Stephanie Harvey is a renowned expert in reading and a much sought after consultant in the area of reading comprehension. She co-authored the book “Strategies that Work” upon which many professional development sessions in our district have been based. She also co-authored the “Comprehension Toolkit” that the district has purchased for intermediate classrooms in all schools.

There will be two separate sessions Ms. Harvey will conduct to support reading comprehension instruction in our K-12 classrooms. These events will equip teachers and coaches in effective instructional practices for teaching comprehension skills and strategies. A portion of the staff development training on April 2-3, 2008, will encompass using the toolkits more effectively as well as using the strategies from the toolkit across content areas in a variety of texts.

Ms. Harvey will provide the following services:

• Deliver an all-day training session to K-3 Reading Coaches and Reading Resource Teachers in Areas 5-7 schools on Wednesday, April 2, 2008.
• Deliver an all-day training session to K-3 reading coaches and reading resource teachers in Areas 1-4 schools on Thursday, April 3, 2008.

Goal 1 – The percentage of students scoring at Level 3 or higher on FCAT reading will increase a minimum of 5 percentage points.
Goal 5 – The District will close the achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.

Funds of $8,802.05 are available from the K-12 Comprehensive Reading Plan Budget, Project 4526.
