Approve the Standard Contract with the State of Florida, Department of Health for Participation in the STEPS to a Healthier Hillsborough Grant Initiative

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This is the fifth year of a five-year grant. This grant program was designed to address the issues of asthma, diabetes, obesity, nutrition, physical activity, and tobacco with underserved populations. Submitted through the Hillsborough County Health Department, the program is highly collaborative and provides support for intervention activities within the school system. The School Board will receive $242,965 from the Hillsborough County Health Department for the 2008/09 year. The funds will support one staff member and staff training for health, education, and resource teams (HEART) district-wide, nutrition and physical education activities, to include, but not limited to Fitness Grams, Healthy School Teams, handouts, literature, and data collection.
ANNUAL DISTRICT GOAL(S) AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR(S)
Goal 5 – The District will eliminate the FCAT achievement gap by a minimum of 10 percentage points as reported by No Child Left Behind.
Goal 6 – All schools in the District will be assigned a state grade of A, B, or C.
FINANCIAL IMPACT (Budgeted: Yes)
$242,965 - STEPS grant dollars are generated through the Centers for Disease Control (federal) and are contracted through the Hillsborough County Health Department. The District functions as a subcontractor for the project.
EVALUATION
The STEPS grant evaluation is done annually. The next evaluation will be 9/22/09.
