Adoption of Proclamation - National Lights On Afterschool Day – October 16, 2008. (Student Services and Federal Programs Division)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Established in 2000 as the nation's leading voice for afterschool, the Afterschool Alliance is the only nonprofit public advocacy organization dedicated to raising awareness of the importance for afterschool programs.

The Alliance works with the Administration, the U.S. Congress, governors and mayors across the country advocating for more investment in afterschool, working to ensure that all children and youth have access to quality afterschool programs. Actress Rhea Perlman is a spokesperson for Lights On Afterschool and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is National Chair, a position he has held since 2001.

Organized by the Afterschool Alliance, Lights On Afterschool 2008 will include some 7,500 events throughout the nation and at United States military bases around the world. Each year, Lights On Afterschool brings together students, parents, educators, afterschool program directors and community and business leaders from across the country to show their support for afterschool programs. At these events, a million Americans will urge leaders to support the afterschool programs that keep children safe, inspire them to learn and help working families.

Hillsborough County Public School’s, Out-of-School Time (HOST) and 21st Century Programs, YMCA Afterschool along with countless other agencies, organizations and businesses support this event throughout the Tampa Bay area. Afterschool programs were provided ideas for activities suggested by the Afterschool Alliance.
